Fencetenna
Performed at Soundcamp, May 2021
Stemming from an interest in 'low fi' as a practice, we constructed a series of no-power, low-budget ‘foxhole’ radios, using wire, razorblades, scrap cardboard and safety pins, and attached these DIY devices to fences - hijacking these as our antennas to scan the radio spectrum. During lockdown, we simultaneously broadcast attempts to use our ‘fencetennas’ to listen to the radio spectrum from our respective locations in France and across the UK, and 'mixed' by Franchesca Casauay located in the Philippines. The performance, a-rehearsal-in-public, was an early experiment in collaboration across distance, and the beginning of our ongoing practice-research into feminist approaches to amateur radio and the radio spectrum as artistic material.
